Easton separated from Weston in 1845, a farming town whose mills sat along the Mill River, the Aspetuck, and Cricker’s Brook. Beginning in 1914 the Bridgeport Hydraulic Company, now Aquarion, bought up those valleys and built the Hemlocks, Aspetuck, Easton, and Saugatuck reservoirs, and today roughly half the town’s land is watershed — which is why Easton still has almost no commercial development and why its historical society counts 154 historic homes, many dating to the 1700s. Houses that old were heated for generations by fireplaces, wood stoves, and later oil before forced-air HVAC was retrofitted in, leaving non-standard duct runs where dust and debris settle for decades.
Easton's oldest housing sits along the Aspetuck River and the roads that once fed the mills, including the Aspetuck Historic District listed on the National Register in 1991.
